MERLIN News Story"-->

Seattle landmark suffers major damage
Preliminary information and photos

At approximately 1330 on Feb 20, 1997, Seattle Fire Department was called to the scene of a fully-involved fire in-progress at the site of the Sunny Jim jam and peanut-butter factory on Airport Way in South Seattle. At the time of this report, the cause of the fire had not been determined. This three-alarm blaze did not appear to involve any injuries to fire fighters or possible occupants of the structure.

This photo taken approximately three hours into the operation.

Units continued to pour water on the structure throughout the night.

Note the large amount of smoke still rolling out of the structure.

Directly to the east, I-5 is blanketed in dense smoke which impeded driving and slowed traffic through the area to a crawl.

  Crews raced to pour water onto a flare-up in the sturcture, about three hours into the operation.

  Seattle's Emergency Incident Command Unit was present to provide greater support to the operation.
