Citizen Panel Reveals Finalists in Search for SFD Chief Seattle, WA A citizens advisory panel, appointed by Mayor Norm Rice, announced their choices in the bid to replace the retired Seattle Fire Department Chief Claude Harris. All candidates are from outside the state and are rumored to be forward-thinking individuals with 'impressive credentials' and many years of firefighting service. The named finalists are:
A department without controversy following the Pang Warehouse Fire, rumors are flying with respect to the candidates, including allegations that the list from which candidates were selected was loaded in favor of a replacement from outside the department; that the front-runner for the position, Barnes, lacks the experience necessary to manage a department of more than a thousand men and women and has previous ties to Rice which placed him on a list that he was not otherwise qualified to appear on. Whatever the situation is, those on the line seem to be looking forward to a change in leadership following the reign of Harris. Many sources within the department have stated that a change will be welcome and all hope that Harris' replacement will be forward thinking and technologically proficient. Other news agencies have reported that Coleman and Sewell are well known to local department personnel because of roles held in professional associations serving the fire service and that both are very progressive.
