Historic Sawmill Burns to Dust

Port Gamble, WA
February 18, 1997

The last remaining building at the Port Gamble sawmill went up in flames, caused by sparks from a site-worker's torch. The fire starte on creosote timbers and was fanned by steady winds in the region. Fifteen fire service units from various Kitsap County fire departments and the U.S. Navy responed to the blaze.

The property is owned by Pope Resources of Poulsbo and wasas being dismantled after the regions milling operations stopped two years ago. Executives could not be reached for comment and damages remain undetermined.
