SFD Settles suit with retired Safety Officer The Seattle Fire Department has apparently entered into an agreement with Rodney Jones, the department's previous safety officer who became an outspoken critic of the department's handling of the Pang Warehouse Fire of 1/95. Jones wanted $1.7 million in damages from the City of Seattle and the Seattle Fire Department for discrimination after being removed from his position and claimed that he had been removed because he had written reports which were critical of the department and cooperated with investigators from the State of Washington. By entering into a settlement, the city is able to avoid what many have described as an embarrassing trial which would likely reveal many shortcomings of the department and its command structure. The Department of Labor and Industries has supported Jones position and was prepared to provided assistance to him if the case had gone to trial. After the Pang fire, L & I had determined that the department had willfully denied Jones the ability to carry out his duties as safety officer and fined them $25k. Jones' former supervisor, retired Chief Stewart Rose, stated that Jones had been removed from his position because department administrators were nervous about his honesty in writing critiques of events within the department and potential damage the department would sustain from a variety of sources. |
