SFD Removes Internet Access from Station Computers The Seattle Fire Department has elected to remove internet access from a number of computers within the department -- all computers except those available to Battalion Chiefs or higher. There's been no allegation that users of the machines have been using internet access to conduct 'improper activities' such as porn-site surfing. Rather, the explanation has been rather vague. Seattle City Councilwoman Tina Podlodowski, chairwoman of the city's Technology and Labor Policy Committee sees the action, described in a memo provided to her by an unnamed fire fighter, as one of a lack of training. Her response to interim Chief Donald Taylor, after reading the memo, asks what the motivation behind the action is. Chief Taylor states that the computers, as they are currently being used, is causing them to contract viruses and is breeding software conflicts which have led to numerous system crashes within the fire houses. Others insist that the problems exist even when no other software or internet access are available on some machines. Podlodowski believes these issues would be better resolved through training and education. At this point, the plan to remove all floppy drives, CD ROM drives and other removable-media devices will continue. |
