HAZMAT Team Responds to Beacon Hill
Called Largest HAZMAT Operation of its Type

A wide variety of agencies responded to this alleged drug-lab on Beacon Hill in Seattle, including Seattle Fire Department, Seattle Police Department, King County Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and the American Red Cross.

Members of SFD's HAZMAT Unit 77 receive a briefing about the job before them.

The HAZMAT crew begins the long task of cleanup at the site. Pictured here, members suit up for the task after preparing a decon site.

Three houses to the left, a daycare center was evacuated as a precaution.

Although the event started at approximately 1000 hrs, it was late into the afternoon before crews were released from the scene, due to the large amount of materials and unusual/dangerous chemicals stored at the site.

Crew members from a company which specializes in the removal and disposal of hazardous materials responded to work with officials in completing the operation in a safe manner.

Just a portion of the chemicals and glassware removed from the structure. More than twenty 55-gallon drums were removed from the site.

Officials on-scene estimated that this cleanup operation could run upwards of one million dollars.

SFD's air unit was on-hand to keep bottles filled as fire fighters made numerous trips to the structure.

American Red Cross provided support to those who responded to the event. Barry Boyce, Disaster Action Team Captain, considers his options.
