Fire In Rail Yard Destroys Storage Building

  • Burlington-Northern Rail Yard
  • Auburn, WA

Members of the Auburn Fire Department perform mop-up activity at the scene of a fire in the Burlington Northern Rail Yard.

Fire fighters from Auburn, Kent and other surrounding areas responded around 1830 hrs in the central Auburn area. Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, fire investigators stated that the structure had been the site of sleeping accomodations by transients for some time - and that the structure had been burned in the past by transients attempting to keep warm.

Unique to the situation is a high-rise high-way above the structure (Highway 18) which towers five stories above the activity. The structure consisted largely of creosote treated timbers which poured smoke from the location and shut down the highway for a period of time, as well as hampering the efforts of fire fighters attempting to extinguish the blaze. The fire destroyed the building which was being used by the railroad for storage at the time.

Members of the American Red Cross responded to provide support to the fire fighters on-scene.
