New Conference Medium Brings New Opportunities

Due to the great amount of activity which occured on our previous forum server, HyperNews, and our inability to keep the machine running due to the enormous load placed on the server, we have been researching new conferencing opportunities. Our new system is based on an SQL Server (Postgres SQL) to provide much greater capability, capacity, and server speed.

What This all Means

The new Phorum Server operates at high speed, running on a much improved server platform. Previously, the system operated on a PERL scripted system, which processed information requests at a much slower speed. With the new system, all messages are stored in a high-speed database format, allowing for more efficient use of the server, greater speed of access, and the ability to control the scripting capabilities of the server.

During the course of the existence of the HyperNews server, many users provided input which encouraged us to change the message load order, starting with the newest messages first. Second, the desire for a spell-checking facility has been a high priority. I believe that Phorum will provide improved capabilities, including the implementation of spell-check.

In With the New - Out With the Old?

Yes, it is true! With the new system being implemented, the old system will go away. We have a target date of February 1, 2k, for shutting down the old HyperNews server, for good. In the mean time, we are attempting to transfer over all old messages on that system and place them on the new server.

Where The Rubber Meets the Road

Following is our list of conferences available to emergency services workers:

Emergency Services Related Rooms:

  • Fire Fighting Topics
  • EMS Topics
  • Emergency Management Topics
  • Dispatching Topics

    Input? Guidance? Suggestions?

The servers which comprise the MERLIN system are constantly in a state of flux. Change is a good thing, in our eyes, as it allows us to provide better resources and tools to our users. If you see something you'd like changed, drop me a line directly at:
